The W.A.T.CH Project now has a community kitchen where members can participate in putting together healthy meals with the guidance and cooking skills of Kate Rew. Â Using fresh local produce, the members are learning how to eat a balanced diet and to create a variety of new dishes. These new skills will help members cook for themselves at home and improve their diet.
Community cooking at the Watch project
“When Julie told me of the chance to help cook a meal for 25 people I was really looking forward to it.
I arrived at the Youth Club (Watch Project) and Kate Rew gave me a huge bag of onions to peel and chop. I began work with great enthusiasm and found the process really therapeutic – I managed to get through the whole bag without shedding a tear; marvellous!
When all the vegetables had been prepared we went into the kitchen where there was a huge saucepan of boiling water bubbling away on the stove. We added the vegetables to the pot and kept giving a stir at regular intervals. We added rice, bacon, herbs, spices and peas to the pot and ended up making a risotto, something I had never done before.
When the meal was ready somebody rang a bell and we dished out the meal. Most people seemed to enjoy it. The next week we made a cottage pie and following that baked potatoes and a nourishing soup.
The whole process has been really rewarding and I look forward to Thursdays with enthusiasm and pleasure. I feel really useful for a change.”
