Mental Health Awareness Week – Day Two: Take Notice

Over the course of Mental Health Awareness Week, (May 10th – 16th) we hope to share with you how the Watch Project incorporates the ‘5 Ways to Wellbeing’ – 5 key actions which have a positive effect on your mental health – and how connecting with nature during this last year has been so important for us all.

Day Two – Take Notice

This is a chance to take notice of your surroundings, having the chance to be curious and be in a state of ‘mindfulness.’ To capture the moment, you are in and take in an awareness of the world around us.

We have certainly had a chance to ‘Take Notice’ during lockdown and see the changing seasons and many of us have reflected on the importance that nature has had to play in our lives.

One of our members shared how much getting out in nature has helped her-

“I had a lovely walk up Pilsdon Pen. We enjoyed a picnic while watching the birds of prey and seeing the bluebells and violets. We also had fun flying a kite which feels like connecting with your inner child. Taking notice of your surroundings in nature makes you feel present and feel grateful and it also brings back fond memories which makes me happy”

Another of our members, Joan, wrote this brilliant poem about the changes taking place in nature right on her doorstep.

Today When I opened my curtains,
I had a beautiful sight,
Jocelyn Park was covered
In flowers of yellow and white
Just dandelions and daisies
But still a variable feast
For such a range of insects
And many a mini beast
Alas, it didn’t last too long
Against the man and his machine
Mowing away all signs of life
Leaving it tidy and green.
No wonder we are losing insects
We take away their food,
Then plant a couple of trees
And think we are doing good
