Open Day Press Release

Long before my post the other day, friend of the Project, Cllr Amanda Broom, prepared a press release about our Open Day. You may have seen it in the paper and read the thing mouth agape already. If not, you can now live that experience online. Thanks, Amanda. We owe you a cup of tea!

“On Thursday 19th May, the Watch (Working All Together in Chard) project, Chard have held another Open Day which was during Mental Health Awareness week. Joyce Passmore, who was a patient in the old mental health system for 15 years (as a suffer of epilepsy), was invited to be the guest speaker. Joyce has delivered many talks on the life stories of people with mental health issues, to not only help break down the stigma of mental health, but also to help individuals find their own potential & come out of isolation. Joyce’s book ‘The light in my mind’ is her story of her own mental health journey, and despite her previous experiences, it brings hope and light to many. (All proceeds go to a charity for children.)

The Watch project which is open every Thursday, are looking for ways to encourage new members. Through much publicity, we all know that Mental Health issues are increasing, and the Watch is perfectly situated to help people who suffer from: isolation, depression, anxiety, mental health problems or just simply need some extra support and encouragement in their lives. Many who are simply isolated, such as lonely single parents, elderly, disabled may wish to join up and form peer relationships.

If you are interested in joining as a member please contact Gemma on 01460 261264, midweek, or Julie 0750 6238540. If you are an organisation, or know someone who may benefit from this project, please access www.watchproject.org.uk and check the criteria for making referrals, or contact Gemma or Julie.

Also present at the opening was Anne Townsend, a local talented artist who volunteers as an artist, Anne started volunteering when her niece, Cllr Amanda Broom called for family support for this fantastic charity. Anne said “I volunteer weekly and have been amazed at the progress made with members, some have found hidden talents. I love being able to give something back to the community.” Cllr Broom’s Dad, Jeff Townsend also volunteers, if you are interested in also becoming a volunteer then please contact Gemma or Julie. Other volunteers include Paul Druce who has run the Wood & Craft Workshop with others for the last 5 years.”
