We’ve all had those mornings where you don’t particularly want to talk to anyone but would still like the company. Whether it’s a desire to sit among your friends in ‘standby mode’ with no pressure to perform, or a longing to people watch in comfortable silence, it’s often difficult in those moods to communicate you want to be left alone without coming across as rude. “No small talk for me, thanks, I’m bored enough!”
Being something of a social setting, this is an issue we at the WATCH Project are very sensitive of. If our members are having a bad day, we don’t want them to avoid coming in just to avoid social cues. The Project is geared towards what they want after all, not what they believe is expected of them.
So after much discussion, we at the WATCH Project have come up with a possible solution to this problem: We decided what we need is a vessel, a symbol you can politely ignore; somebody inoffensive, somebody it’s impossible to dislike – somebody like Vernon Kaye. What we got was Sam Scott, our new mascot!
No doubt fed up of seeing him lounge round the house, watching Loose Women reruns on the box all day, WATCH member (and dog owner) Jayne Scott put his name forward in an effort to get him out the house more. We’re still working out the fine details, but ideally, he’ll be visiting the Project every Thursday, tail between his legs soon.
Hopefully, he’ll serve as both a talking point for the more shy among us, and act as a brick wall for those just looking for company – not conversation.
